Character: Ryunosuke Naruhodo
Canon: The Great Ace Attorney, Post GAA2
Age: 23-24
Background Information: Wiki page
Personality:
- If there's one thing Ryunosuke has always been known for, it’s being jumpy, and kind of naturally shifty and anxious in nature. NPCs comment on this regularly, citing his often nervous and fidgety demeanor, and he has a distinct habit of tensing up and spacing out while his eyes flit about nervously. You kind of can’t blame people for getting the impression that he's up to no good. Whenever he finds himself outside of his comfort zone, he often bungles introductions, stammering or forgetting his words and having to rely on his assistant Susato to pick up the slack.
- While his jittery nature can sometimes make him come off as suspicious or unreliable, the truth is that Ryunosuke doesn’t seem to have a dishonest bone in his body... And in fact seems almost incapable of lying. He can't even seem to pull off polite white-lies a lot of the time, as his face is often described (by others AND by himself) as being overly expressive. There are many times where his friends are able to guess exactly what he’s thinking just by glancing at him, and to make things even worse, he has an unfortunate habit of sometimes muttering things out loud that he means to keep inside his head. This can lead him into trouble, as he’ll occasionally say something judgemental or insulting that he meant to keep to himself... Or he’ll be so bad at keeping his thoughts from coming through in his expressions that people will get mad at him without him having said a single word.
- However, despite his semi-frequent social blunders, it's worth noting that one of the key things that contributes to Ryunosuke's success as a lawyer is, in fact, his emotional intelligence. He regularly demonstrates a sort of keen intuition when dealing with people, being quite adept at reading between the lines and picking up little hunches about people's true intentions. His polite and kind nature, combined with his desire to try and see the good in people, can sometimes cause others to view him as naive. In actuality, he's quite perceptive, and he grows keener and more accurate in his judgment of character over time.
- He has a sense of compassion and sympathy for the downtrodden that is easily one of his strongest virtues, and his own experiences with being wrongly accused also make him naturally inclined to want to help those who the police and government try to mistreat. He can't stand the idea of anyone having to face the courts alone, and so he takes his duty as a lawyer extremely seriously in this regard. He puts his client's well-being above all else, even ahead of his own goals. For example, in a pivotal moment at the start of case 1-3, he’s given a murder trial as a test to see if he’s suitable to take on the visiting law student role. Arguably, making this happen is the most important thing in Ryunosuke’s life at that moment. But when it is revealed the client would be subject to capital punishment if he loses, we get this telling bit of dialogue:
"No matter how badly I'd like to be recognised as a lawyer and stay here in Great Britain... ...to risk another man's life by treating his one and only chance at a trial so trivially... ...would be utterly unforgivable!"
It's only once it's revealed that the defendant has literally no one to stand with him in court that Ryunosuke changes his tune on this. Even if he doesn't feel prepared or experienced enough in the slightest, he decides it would be even more unforgivable to leave the man completely without a defense.
- Tenacity is a defense attorney's bread and butter, and Ryunosuke has it in spades. He shows incredible loyalty to his clients as well, often putting his own reputation and good standing within the courts on the line in order to defend them. The most notable example of this within the first game is in 1-5, when he's defending Gina Lestrade. He stands up essentially against the whole British government, by threatening to leak secret information to the court in order to exonerate her. As a foreign lawyer this is an incredibly precarious position to put himself in. He does it anyway, because he firmly believes in his client's innocence, and because he has promised her that he would stick with her to the bitter end.
- Devotion to the truth is his primary philosophy in case solving; if there's ever evidence or testimony that seems damning to his client (which, let's be real, is more often than he'd probably prefer), he doesn't shy away from it. He believes that every bit of information needs to be brought to the light in order for the truth to be known. So he doggedly follows every thread to its conclusion, and dutifully navigates every obstacle the prosecution, witnesses and jurors may try to throw at him. Indeed, even though Ryunosuke can be a bit of a goofball, and may be prone to melodramatics and sarcasm at times... At his core, he has a bright spirit and a never-say-die attitude that always carries him through the day. Even when it seems like all hope is lost, and he doesn't have a shred of evidence left in his favor, he refuses to give in until he's satisfied that the truth has been found.
Abilities & Inventory:
He's just a normal guy and has no special abilities :(
Not sure what kind of dreamotion abilities I want to give him as of yet. Defensive abilities of some sort (forcefields???) would be thematically appropriate and are a possible future choice.
Inventory:
- Yumei University student ID pin
- Defense attorney armband (has Kazuma's name embroidered on the inside)
- Katana (Karuma) w/ scabbard
Suitability & Plans:
Honestly I don't have a ton of very specific plans of what I want to do with him since I like to do things fairly off the cuff, but. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in exploring how he'll cope being taken from a canon point where he's just finished committing to a very important job, and suddenly won't... Have access to that job anymore. Or rather, this particular part of him won't have access to it? It means instead of being driven to escape/go home as he might in other jamjar settings, he's just going to have to focus on the here and now and... Apply himself to things other than law. That's a side of him that isn't exactly absent from the canon material, but it still doesn't get explored super much, given what the game is about.
Great Ace Attorney is also much more grounded in like, 'real world' mechanics, so I'm looking forward to throwing him at more fantastical elements and seeing how he'll cope. He's not really a physical fighting kind of guy, he's used to using his words to accomplish things. I imagine it'll be fun to apply his natural talents while also pushing him out of his comfort zone a bit.
